Illness88 from the IDF:FFI BF2 mod kindly decided to make the AML-90 and AML-60 for both of our mods. Unfortunately, it was very unoptimised in its original state. As such, I decided to optimise it.
The biggest issue was the texture memory usage, mainly from the automatic UV packing this model had, but also in the way the texture sheets were setup. Even though both the AML-60 and AML-90 use many common parts with only their turrets being unique, they both have unique UVs and texture maps that neither could share.
As a result, I separated off the chassis and the turrets into their own texture sheets, that way if both vehicles were loaded on the same map, they could share their common textures and if not, a bit of texture memory was saved from not having to load the textures for those parts. I also combined the two wheel textures into one sheet, again them sharing as many common parts as they could (one wheel is dirty, the other is a spare) and I also set the Sand/Mud Ladder (Waffle) to use the same texture for both its front and back faces and a much cleaner UV for the sides.
As a result, when loading both the AML-90 and AML-60 on the same map a texture area of 9,175,040 pixels squared was reduced to 2,228,224 pixels squared, a reduction of 76%!
If compared with only the AML-90 loaded on the map, then it would be 4,980,736 pixels squared reduced to 1,966,080 pixels squared, a reduction of 60%, and slightly more again if only the AML-60 loaded.
I also cleaned up the mesh itself a bit but nothing too significant there to really speak of, mainly as I needed to keep the mesh more or less the same in order to easily bake the old textures to the new UVs.
