The Main Farm House & the Dairy House, looking West

The Main Farm House & the Dairy House, looking West

A client wished to renovate an old set of bed and breakfast suites (which had been converted from an old milking parlour in 2004), to make them adjoining liveable space to the main house.

As part of the brief, they wished to increase the utility room's size significantly, which can also be used as a kitchen with a gas-fired oven & stove. The most significant change was to create a large studio/craft room by combining the two central bedrooms and creating a doorway through to the end bedroom to make a guest room for the main house. Removing the central wall required strengthening the roof structure and, with it, the opportunity to also make an additional loft space for extra storage. The outside veranda, which was previously the only access to each room, would be removed, and all but one of the doors replaced with new windows. Only one outside door would remain to allow access to the farm yard. On top of this, I saw an opportunity to design a log store for the Studio's and main house's log burners, using reclaimed tiles that were available on-site.

Costings were a significant factor in the design, so I worked with the original structure as much as possible and saved costs in other areas while still meeting the client's requirements.
