This map (/mini-mod for Project Reality) is based on the 1982 conflict between Britain and Argentina over the Falkland Islands, taking into account the historic factors and trying to replicate them in a way that is fun and balanced, whilst also working within the limitations of the BF2 engine.
This map was largely an experiment to see how large we can make maps on the Refractor 2 engine. This turned out to be 16km x 16km (although with a minimap area of 8km x 8km, but between the British Carrier & and the Argentine Airbase is over 21km).
This could only be achieved by ditching the engine's own terrain system and making the terrain out of a static mesh (aka, mesh terrain), which isn't without its problems. The main advantage with this size of the map was I could somewhat portray the importance of the air campaign in the war to a degree not seen in Project Reality before, as well as spreading out the ground combat a bit but not enough so players had to spend days yomping (walking) across the map as the troops had to in r/l.
Some parts of the terrain may seem very low detailed, such as terrain textures not blending into each other, no grass/undergrowth and so on, but these are due to them not being possible with Mesh Terrain on the Refractor 2 engine and it was a compromise I had to make in order to get this size of map on this engine.
